Rajinikanth Tamil Nadu market shrinks - Will Kalki Nag be a saviour or do a Lokesh ?
As Rajinikanth market share in Tamil Nadu is shrinking, will Nag Ashwin who gave a Hit Kalki that entered the Rs 1000 cr club as next Director recover Thalauvar market or be another over hyped Lokesh ? Read on:
Rajinikanth’s films, including the latest Coolie, underperform in Tamil Nadu.
At 75 years
of age, Rajini still has a substantial market
in all languages. But when we see his recent films, compared to other areas,
the movies are not doing well in Tamil Nadu.
Kabali, with
poor WOM, managed to set very big numbers in all other areas, but in Tamil
Nadu, the numbers were not that huge. During the Petta vs. Viswasam clash, the
former outshined Viswasam in all areas.
But Ajith’s
Viswasam takes a clear lead in TN. Jailer, which set new records everywhere for
Kollywood, failed to beat Ponniyin Selvan 1 and did not cross the 200 Cr mark
as well.
Now,
Rajinikanth’s Coolie underperforms in Tamil Nadu. Yes, it had a weak/below
average WOM, but comparing to other areas’ performance, it should have
collected at least 170 Cr in TN.
But reaching
150 Cr itself looks like a tough task for the film. Till now, it collected 132
Cr gross in 11 days in TN. All films of Rajinikanth in recent years are doing
10-15% lower on expectations in the main market of Tamil Cinema.
#Coolie 11 Days Box
Office Collection :- Tamil Nadu : ₹129.25 Cr Andhra & Nizam : ₹63.00 Cr
Karnataka : ₹38.20 Cr Kerala : ₹24.10 Cr Rest of India : ₹40.00 Cr Overseas :

Strong
industry buzz points to Nag Ashwin, known for Mahanati and Kalki 2898 AD.
Sources claim Ashwin recently narrated a script to Rajinikanth, who reportedly
approved the idea and asked him to develop it further. Fans are excited about
the possibility of this collaboration, though reactions remain mixed.
Rajinikanth’s Coolie received criticism online despite high expectations, while
Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, though successful at the box office, faced divided
opinions. Some fans believe the partnership could create something special,
while others are cautious. They argue that Rajinikanth’s collaboration with
Lokesh Kanagaraj already turned into a disappointment with Coolie, and fear
that Ashwin may also face risks with the superstar.
Rajini interference and Lokesh over condidence hit Coolie and Sun
Is Rajinikanth reason for loose narrative and unnecessary cameos in Coolie ? Lokesh Kanagaraj insistence that A censor tag will not harm the collections put Sun Pictures in position where it is facing revenue loss as family crowds are not coming in second week . Kannada , Telugu viewers are angry that Upendra and Nagarjuna are omitted in posters after first release. All this has resulted in Coolie beating Vikram as top grosser but will occupy a place below Leo in Kollywood openers list. So far Sun Pictures has made only 70- 80 % recovery of the Rs 350 crore budget and seeing the drop, second week is crucial as it has to add 20% more to at least reach a break even. The mixed opinion are a result of Rajinikanth’s interference and Lokesh over confidence.
The talk from Coolie crew is that Upendra – Shoubin characters
along with Aamir were all Rajinikanth idea to provide back up to film box
office. Shoubin role was extended to a point that it diluted Nagarjuna’s role
and Upendra and Aamir were sheer waste
and added nothing to the narration. Rajinikanth probably after Jailer thought
that Mohanlal- Sivarajkumar- Jackie cameos had helped the film at box office.
Placement of these cameos and that it was Director Nelson’s idea had worked
while in Coolie it was not Lokesh idea. Another reason said is that the surgery
that took place while Coolie was shooting had led to Lokesh to place less
burden on Rajinikanth and only way to bring in cameo actors.
Irony is that when Lokesh directed Vikram, many
thought that it would a Kamal Haasan
proxy directed film . It was not so and Lokesh had his way through. It made
Vikram the 6th top Kollywood opener.
Sun Pictures
and the team received slight backlash for the way they promoted the movie. Many
noticed and pointed out that the makers had used posters featuring all the
stars before release. However, the post-release posters shared online featured
only Rajinikanth, excluding others.
It seems
like the makers took the criticism seriously, and today, they released a poster
featuring Kannada star Upendra alongside Rajinikanth. Fans are happy and are
asking the team to continue doing so.
Lokesh in interview said that he was not going to
compromise on violence and so he refused cuts and accepted A as he overlooked
the opinion that it could affect audience coming with kids as Lokesh felt that
youth who are mainstay of viewing crowd would compensate for the family crowd.
Now the violence in film has not satisfied the youth and bad mouth publicity
had affected it badly. To break even it needs the family crowd in second week
and so the rush to High court for U/A. Sun wants A certificate to toned down to
U/A without any cuts. The case will come only next week and after weekend. By then
the buzz would have faded out and everybody would have moved to Sivakarthikeyan
and Madharasi.
COOLIE INSIDER REVIEW - Don’t expect Vikram or Kaithi l
All your doubts cleared by insider who watched Coolie Telugu
- Script-wise, Coolie is very average. The film has a strong theme of friendship, but eventually, style takes over substance—especially in the second half.
- It’s a movie filled ul of episodes, and many of those have turned out well, especially the action sequences.
- Rajinikanth’s role will be a treat for his fans. But for the common audience, it might test their patience a little —similar to how GBU worked well for Ajith fans but didn’t click with everyone else this though wont be that polarised but still might irriates a little. De-aging was okay—not great, but not cringeworthy either.
- Nagarjuna’s role, which Rajinikanth referred to as “the next Anthony” in the Telugu press meet, starts off well in the first half. He looks stylish and shows his mettle in several scenes—even dominating Rajini in a few moments. However, the role fizzles out in the second half.
- The interval scene, in classic Lokesh style, has come out really well. If you’re familiar with Lokesh’s movies, you might even guess how it unfolds.
- The film received an A rating—not just for violence, but also due to cuss words. These might surprise or even shock some viewers.
- Aamir Khan’s role isn’t forced and fits into the narrative well—but he appears pale in role and also sequences because it looks patience testing by then. Not a ROLEX worthy cameo .
- Upendra’s character is really good. As many guessed, he appears mostly in the flashback sequences and has a minor but impactful presence in the present timeline too.
- Shoubin is ruthless as the villain and leaves a strong impact. He deserves top marks.
- Overall, Coolie offers some great episodes, powerful background scores, and solid performances—but the story is Lokesh weakest though he tried very different one.
- First half > Second half in terms of engagement. Still, both halves contain good episodes. The second half is action-heavy.
- Nagarjuna shines in the first half, but his character becomes regular in the latter half.
- Shoubin’s performance is commendable.
- Upendra delivers a strong extended cameo with the best fan-service scene alongside Rajini.
- Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan serve as the emotional threads of the story, but this is also where the writing becomes weak.
- Rajinikanth, as always, impresses with his acting and screen presence. The film is filled with Rajinisms, though Lokesh couldn't fully utilize them. That said, there are several moments that will enthrall.
Overall:
Don’t expect Vikram or Kaithi level storytelling. Lokesh tried something unique but couldn’t sustain it consistently. However, the major episodes have come out really well, and that should help at the box office.
Tip: Keep your story expectations in check to enjoy Coolie to the fullest.
After Valli, Rajini's Coolie gets A Certificate / Dhanush Fans happy with AI Ending
Unusual for Rajinikanth, who boasts a fan following across age categories, his upcoming action entertainer Coolie has obtained an A certificate after clearing the censorship formalities. Valli was also certified 'A' but Superstar played only guest role in it. Is #Coolie the first full length Rajinikanth film to get 'A' certificate?
With this
announcement, Coolie will be the first Rajini film in
years to get an A certificate. It is worth noting that the film's director,
Lokesh Kanagaraj, had said there won't be any compromises on violence and
action in the film.
Produced by
Kalanithi Maran under his Sun Pictures banner, Coolie boasts
a star-studded ensemble consisting of Nagarjuna as Simon, Sathyaraj as
Rajasekar, Upendra as Kaleesha, Shruti Haasan as Preethi, and Soubin Shahir as
Dayal. Rajinikanth plays Deva in the film. Confirming speculations, it was
revealed that Aamir Khan will play Dahaa in Coolie. The film
is a reunion of sorts as Rajini teams up with Sathyaraj 38 years after Mr
Bharath and Aamir Khan 29 years after Aatank Hi Aatank.
The
controversy erupted with the August 1 re-release of the film’s Tamil
version, Ambikapathy.
Studio Eros International, reportedly without the director’s consent, used
artificial intelligence to fundamentally change the movie’s iconic,
heartbreaking conclusion.
What The
New AI Raanjhanaa Ending Reveals
In the
original film, audiences were left shattered as a fatally injured Kundan
(Dhanush) succumbs to his injuries, leaving Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) to grieve his
lifeless body. The new AI version rewrites this cinematic history. The scene
cuts from Zoya caressing Kundan’s face to a shot of him breathing. His friends
watch in relief before entering the room, smiling. Kundan then opens his eyes
and wakes up, not to a somber score, but to celebratory music. Reports from
those who have seen the re-release claim the AI effect is seamless, making it
difficult for new viewers to even spot the alteration.
One fan
wrote, "AI version new climax response for #Ambikapathy re-release.
#IdlyKadai #Ambikapathy #Dhanush."
The video
that has been making the rounds online also shows Dhanush's character, Kundan,
opening his eyes again, and he lives! Seeing his character not die, fans can be
heard screaming and whistling.
Another fan
mentioned, "My Kundan is alive, I'm so emotional while watching. Thank you
Al #Raanjhanaa."
Someone else
wrote, "#Raanjhanaa / #Ambikapathy gets a
beautiful twist with a new AI-generated climax & it's so realistic, it hits
right in the feels. Kundan is alive... and so is our love for this timeless
story. AI just gave fans the closure they always wanted."
Rajinikanth Coolie - The Power House is Hindi Title
Taking the negative feedback for the Hindi title Majdoor in social media circles and from Rajini fans in North Indian belt, Lokesh and Sun Pictures has decided to rename it as Coolie – The Power House. We had repprted this read; https://dhakshinscreen.blogspot.com/2025/06/coolie-as-majdoor-in-hindi-gets-bad.html. Amitabh’s Coolie is famous among Hindi viewers and it was during the shoot that Big B got seriously injured, Many felt that Majdoor title gave it a dubbing film feel.
There is another Hindi Mazdoor that had Dilip Kumar-
Raj Babbar- Nanda and Rati Agnihotri and directed by Ravi Chopra. Read a few
titbits about it:
Mazdoor is
the remake of. B.R.Chopra earlier film Naya Daur. Dilip Kumar, Nazir Husein and
Johnny Walker were in both films.
After Nikaah
Salma Agha was signed for Mazdoor and even recorded one song but left the film
before shooting started. Rati Agnihotri replaced her.
Rati
Agnihotri was uncomfortable with the gray role where she plays a seductress and
wanted to leave the film but Ravi Chopra convinced her otherwise. When the
movie was released she walked away with a lot of accolades despite the huge
ensemble cast.
There was a
story doing the rounds that Dilip Kumar was not interested in the film due to
Ravi Chopra's poor box office record. when B. R Chopra offered Dilip Kumar a
three film deal he agreed. Ravi Chopra denied the rumours.
This was
Dilip Kumar and Nanda's only film together. Both were at the peak of their
careers in the 1960s but were never paired together in their prime.
Nanda stated
she only accepted the film because she wanted to work with Dilip Kumar.
Parts of the
film were similar to the English serial Master Of The Game based on Sidney
Sheldon's novel. First and last time Music Composer R.D.Burman and Lyricist
Hassan Kamal worked together. Mazdoor was one of the last film Characters Actor
Nazir Hussain signed.
Thalapathy to do cameo in Kaithi2 with Kamal / No Illaya Kamaraj says Thalapathy Vijay

So after wrapping up Marshal, Karthi wTamilaga Vettri Kazhagam President and actor Vijay on Friday ..
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President and actor Vijay appealed to students participating in the party's felicitation functions on Friday, June 13, to refrain from comparing him to the late Chief Minister K Kamaraj or discussing the 2026 assembly elections.
At one such event organised on Friday, June 13, Vijay honoured Class 10 and Class 12 students who secured top ranks in their respective schools across Tamil Nadu, according to the report by The New Indian Express.
During his address, he requested the students' participants to avoid political references and refrain from using terms like "Ilaiya Kamaraj (Little Kamaraj)" to refer to him.
Before the event began, attendees observed a two-minute silence in memory of the victims of the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. "This is a small request, please don't take it the wrong way. Let's keep the speeches a bit brief and avoid political references. Please refrain from speaking about the 2026 elections, or mentioning leaders like Kamaraj or Ilaya Kamaraj. Instead, talk about your teachers, your school, or any other subject of your choice," he said.
Vijay's remarks appeared to be a response to recent controversies. Certain groups and caste-based organisations opposed to students comparing Vijay with Kamaraj at a recent event, as per the report by The New Indian Express.
At Friday's event, approximately 300 meritorious students from 32 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and 19 in Puducherry were presented with cash prizes and merit certificates.
Aamir Khan and Lokesh Kanagaraj join for Superhero film
An announcement that stunned Bollywood and South Entertainment
media – Aamir Khan says “Lokesh and I are making a film. This belongs to the superhero genre. It
is a big-scale action film and is going on floors in the second half of 2026.”
, No media house even remotely got near to this announcement as even us down in
Chennai were looking towards Lokesh teaming up with South heroes and there was
not even an hint of a colaboaration. he duo worked together for the first time
for the upcoming Rajinikanth film Coolie, in which Aamir Khan will have a
cameo. We hear
Aamir, who
is famous for cinematic landmarks such as Ghajini, 3 Idiots, PK,
and Dangal, teaming up with director Lokesh Kanagaraj—known
for Kaithi, Master, and Leo—shows a huge
new leap into badged genre filmmaking. Lokesh, who has built a fan-favourite
cinematic universe in Tamil cinema, is stepping into Hindi cinema with a clear
vision of building his own brand of mass storytelling.
The
still-untitled superhero/action hybrid film that is in the early stages appears
to be conceived as a pan-India spectacle at a scale unlike any of Aamir’s
previous projects.
The film,
whose title has yet to be revealed, is slated to begin production in the second
half of 2026, after Aamir has finished filming Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic of
Dadasaheb Phalke.
For now,
fans can look forward to seeing Aamir Khan in Sitaare Zameen Par this
month. The movie is a remake of the Spanish film Campeones. Aamir Khan plays a
disgraced basketball coach who is ordered to train a team of people on the
spectrum by the court after he is arrested for drunk driving.
Box
Office Worldwide Verdict
Aamir Khan‘s formal
entry in the superhero genre does so under Lokesh Kanagaraj, who will bring his
own mighty, gritty lens—one of the most exciting gambles to take by an Indian
filmmaker in 2026.
PK 2 is off the table, but the
announcement of Dadasaheb Phalke,
followed by the announcement of a superhero of the epic kind, wraps a
well-overdue signal of a new reinvigorated Aamir.
This is not
just about stunts or celebrity — it is the ambitions of the narrative that
seeks to redraw the legacies of mainstream Indian cinema. And if Sitaare
Zameen Par is merely an emotional return, then this superhero film is
likely an unlikely spectacular reinvention.
Aamir is
back, and he is future ready.
Lokesh to Repeat Leo Record with Coolie / Thalapathy could not folllow Kamal's advice
Why Lokesh
Kanagaraj will repeat Leo success with Coolie and Rajinikanth ? Released in 2023, Leo marked the reunion of
Lokesh Kanagaraj and Thalapathy Vijay after Master. With crazy hype on the
ground, the film clocked a superb 66 crore net at the Indian
box office on day 1. This figure was possible after Leo clocked high
figures in two Telugu States as well as in Kerala and Karnataka. Now Coolie
will have to play second fiddle to War 2 that has NTR Je with Hrithik. But
looks like Coolie is just a rampage in these States after the lukewarm response
to War 2.
Coolie has
many things going its way. It has many familiar faces, including Rajinikanth
and Nagarjuna. And on top of that there is adequate commercial appeal with the
massy BGMs and commercial visuals.
Read more at:
https://www.m9.news/movienews/coolie-shock-to-war-2-in-telugu-states.
War 2 is going to be a
Hindi flavoured spy actioner with very little domestic Telugu touch. Barring
the presence of NTR, there might not be too much to get excited for the Telugu
audience.
As
officially announced, Coolie is scheduled to release on August 14, 2025. In a
solo release, the film would definitely bag
the biggest opening ever for a Tamil film, as War 2 is a Hindi film dubbed in
Telugu – Tamil . Vijay’s Leo holds
the record of the biggest Kollywood opening at the Indian box office with its
massive day 1 collection of 60 crore+. Lokesh will match it or go one step more with
Coolie.
According to an earlier report by India Today, Kamal Haasan was asked about Vijay’s films in a television interview. The National Award-winning actor responded by saying that Vijay had given some blockbuster films, and he had even seen some of them. But Kamal Haasan also wanted Vijay to make good films like accomplished Hindi film industry actors Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. He further said that Vijay has the potential to do that. By saying that Vijay should make ‘good films’ like Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, Kamal Haasan might have meant that he should do films that blend quality storytelling with mass appeal.
Interestingly,
Kamal Haasan’s remark about Vijay came in the same year when the latter’s film
Bairavaa was released in theatres. Although the film received an underwhelming
response from several critics, Bairavaa reportedly became Vijay’s fastest
film to breach the 100-crore mark at that time (Via Indian Express) Before that, Vijay starred in Atlee’s
action thriller Theri, which is regarded as one of the most popular films of
his career. Both these Bollywood stars were doing content-oriented films, which
did well commercially. Perhaps that’s why Kamal Haasan cited Aamir Khan and
Shah Rukh Khan as examples and wanted Vijay not to focus solely on mass
entertainers. An advice that Thalapathy could not take heed. Last film is Jana
Nayakan.

Lokesh as hero pooja today / Priyanka Mohan- Nivin Pauly in Benz / Karthi Sardar 2 Hindi Prologue clicks
Sources said that Lokesh Kanagaraj’s debut film as a lead kicks off with a pooja today. The film will be directed by Captain Miller Arun Matheswaran, and the shooting begins in a week. The movie will be produced by Lokesh Kanagaraj himself under the G Squad banner, along with Passion Studios and The Route banners.
Lokesh
Kanagaraj frequently shows up on screen in the movies that he directs. His
appearance in ‘Master’ with Thalapathy Vijay thrilled fans, and he also
appeared in the music video for ‘Inimel,’ written by Kamal Haasan.
Raghawa
Lawrence will play the lead role, while Madhavan and Nivin Pauly play crucial
roles. Now, actress Priyanka Mohan joins LCU, as she will play the
lead actress in Benz.
The film
will have a big craze among audiences as it is an LCU project, and they are
waiting for more details of the movie. Lokesh directed all three films of the Lokesh
Cinematic Universe, but for the first time, an LCU film was directed by another
filmmaker. The story, screenplay, and production will be done by Lokesh
Kanagaraj.
The film is
titled Benz, and it was announced long
ago but was delayed. Finally, Benz Film’s official pooja ceremony was done, and
the shoot started yesterday. Directed by Bhagyaraja Kannan, the film’s music
will be composed by Sai Abhyankar.
Karthi is pushing his boundaries to deliver a
pan-Indian success with Sardar 2. If Sardar 2 ends up as a successful venture
for Karthi, it may open up a new market for him in North Indian states.
Karthi has
more sequels in the pipeline than most Indian actors currently. Besides filming
‘Sardar 2’, a sequel to his hit spy thriller Sardar, he has also committed to
‘Kaithi 2’, the highly anticipated sequel to the Kaithi blockbuster by Lokesh
Kanagaraj.
Adding to
the excitement, there’s buzz around sequels to Karthi’s earlier hits like
‘Khakee’. While there were initial talks of a sequel to ‘Kanguva’, the film’s
poor performance at the box office may have shelved those plans for now.
However, fans were thrilled to spot Karthi in the climax of ‘Hit 3’, which
unofficially hints that he will take the lead in ‘Hit 4’, further cementing his
role in the growing Hit universe.
