Non spoiler review:

First half was really good. Emotional and rural connect really worked. A couple of scenes involving the calf and idly shop worked brilliantly. Even the songs were very well woven into the film. Father-son-Idly Kadai bond was extremely moving. Interval setup was pakka for 2nd half.

Instead of building on the emotional drama the first half built, it moves into familiar hero vs villain territory. It gets generic but a few writing touches involving Parthiban’s character, villagers unity work well. Climax was a fun touch.

Overall, a pretty simple yet solid feel-good drama which slides into generic action territory but solid acting, music and production values enhance the film. A refreshing breath of air amidst all the loud action movies.

TL;DR: Brilliant first half but second half is a bit generic and repetitive and loses steam before picking up in pre climax and ends on a fun note

Kollywood actor Suriya’s last few films have failed to impress the audience and have ended up as commercial failures. Power couple Suriya and Jyotika's 17-year-old daughter Diya seems to have followed the same footsteps as her parents, by entering the world of showbiz. Diya is making her directorial debut with the film, Leading Light produced by Suriya and Jyotika's 2D Entertainment.

The film was screened for the 'Oscar qualifying run' at the Regency Theatre, California. The docu-drama discusses the experiences of "Women Gaffers of Bollywood." 2D Entertainment shared the poster on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

Diya made her debut just a few months after she passed out of the University of Southern California, USA. In May, in a post, Suriya and Jyoti shared a post of Diya on Instagram. Next is that Suriya’s Karuppu is being pushed from Diwali to Pongal and will take on Thalapathy Vijay Jana Nayagan and SK’s Parasakthi. 123Telugu has learned that noted director Venky Atluri recently met Anil Kapoor for a special role in his upcoming film featuring Suriya as the main lead.

The gossip in film circles is that Venky Atluri narrated the story of his new film to Anil Kapoor and requested him to play a crucial role. Reports suggest that Anil Kapoor liked his character and has given his nod. Though an official confirmation is yet to be made, this news is slowly going viral among film circles. Anl had acted in Mani Ratnam’s Pallavi Anu Pallavi and a Mohanlal- Priyadarshan film in a cameo.

Not many know that Anil Kapoor made his Telugu film debut with Bapu’s Vamsa Vruksham way back in 1980. It will be interesting to see what kind of role he takes up in this Venky Atluri film. Anil Kapoor has appeared in several movies that are remakes of South Indian films. Some of his notable remakes include Nayak (remake of Tamil film Mudhalvan), Mr. Bechara (remake of Tamil film Veetla Visheshanga), and Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (remake of Telugu film Pavitra Bandham). He also starred in Gharwali Baharwali, which is a remake of the Tamil film Thaikulame Thaikulame. 

 The blockbuster team of Director Chidambaram and write Jithu Madhvan after Manjumel Boys has launched next title Balan produced by Kannada banner KVN Productions. Director Jithu Madhavan, best known for helming films like Romancham and Aavesham.

 Thug Life Box Office Collection Day 1: Fails To Beat Retro’s 19.25 Crores, Registers 4th Biggest Opening For Kollywood In 2025!

 Among Kollywood releases of 2025, Thug Life has clocked the fourth biggest opening by staying below Suriya’s Retro (19.25 crores).

Take a look at the top Kollywood openers of 2025 at the Indian box office (net collection):

1.     Good Bad Ugly – 29.25 crores

2.     Vidaamuyarchi – 27 crores

3.     Retro – 19.25 crores

4.     Thug Life – 17.50 crores

 

While the original Tamil version was good in occupancy, it failed to reach its full potential, as walk-ins were less than expected for Thug Life in the evening and night shows. The response in the Telugu-dubbed version was also not up to the mark. The Hindi-dubbed version turned out to be a washout on the opening day itself. As a result, a day 1 collection of 17.50 crore net was registered at the Indian box office.

The number of 17.50 crores is not bad at all, but considering the scale, names involved, and the film’s reported budget (200 crores), this collection is disappointing.

The failure of Indian 2 has seemingly taken on Kamal Haasan’s pull. Also, the promotional campaign couldn’t generate the hype of an event film. This resulted in an underwhelming advance booking for the opening day, and later, poor reviews and word-of-mouth made things worse for Thug Life.

The biggest plus for the action thriller was the reunion of Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam. This reunion factor helped the film to a certain extent, but that was clearly not enough. When the announcement video was dropped in November 2023, everyone got excited and hoped for a unique experience from Kamal and Mani’s duo. However, until the film’s release, the excitement level wasn’t the same for several reasons.

Thug Life has failed to meet high expectations. Starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role, the Kollywood magnum opus promised a lot with its trailer, but unfortunately, the content has left the majority of the audience disappointed. This negativity took a major toll on day 1’s collection at the Indian box office, as it couldn’t even cross the 20 crore mark. K

Suriya - Venky film OTT deal closed - Retro 4th Top Grosser

Though Suriya’s upcoming film with R J Balaji OTT rights has not been closed, his  film with Venky Atluri which did not even go on floors yet, but the movie’s digital rights have already closed for a massive price of 85 Cr by Netflix. Venky Atluri’s brand is working big for Suriya’s film, and his previous film, Lucky Baskhar, created a sensation in theaters/OTT and an all-time record viewership on Netflix. With Sir and Lucky Baskhar, Venky Atluri created a big brand in audiences. 

Suriya’s Retro in all probability will be the fourth highest grosser of Kollywood 2025 after a 55% drop on Monday. So far it has overtaken Chiyaan Vikram’s Veera Dheera Sooran to be fifth grosser and will beat Madha Gaja Raja to take the 4^th place. The box office figures are: As per estimates, Retro earned 3.40 crores on day 5, a drop of 56.12% compared to Friday’s 7.75 crores. It’s an alarming sign and the film must maintain a steady pace for a decent week 1 collection.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Retro barely pulled in ₹3.38 crore (India nett) on day five. Despite an okay opening of ₹19.25 crore on 1 May, the film crashed the next day—same old story. Suriya’s previous film Kanguva followed the exact same script an initial ₹24 crore opening, followed by a free fall to ₹9.5 crore on day two—a humiliating 60% drop. Retro did even worse, plummeting 61%.

Theaters showed the damage. Day two of Retro saw average occupancy at just 40.23%, with morning shows scraping together 23% and even night shows barely touching 53%. 

Including Monday’s collection, Retro stands at 46.55 crore net at the Indian box office, as per Sacnilk. With this, it has comfortably crossed Chiyaan Vikram’s Veera Dheera Sooran (42.71 crores) to become Kollywood’s 5th highest-grossing film at the Indian box office in 2025.

It will soon surpass Vishal’s Madha Gaja Raja (48.70 crores) to grab the 4th spot on the list. However, it won’t be able to beat Vidaamuyarchi‘s 81.58 crores.

Mythri Movie Makers Reply To Ilayaraaja's Copyright Infringement Notice

Talking to BVS Prakash of Deccan Chronicle, Ravi Shankar Yellamanchili has said that they have not yet received any official communication from Ilaiyaraaja. "We have not received any notice from Ilaiyaraaja garu yet. We have great respect for his musical genius, and once we receive the notice, our legal team will handle the matter," he stated.

Yellamanchili further stated that all necessary permission were followed before using the songs. “We adhered to all the rules. We approached the relevant music companies, paid for the rights, and even obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) before including the songs in the film,” he added, asserting that no rules had been violated.

The legal notice sent to producers stated that the three songs have been “used, altered, and commercially exploited” in the film, “without obtaining express consent/permission of our Client and/or his authorisation, and without payment of royalties that he is statutorily entitled to.”

Such actions constitute unauthorised use, appropriation and a clear infringement of our Client’s copyright and moral rights. You may also please take note that he has never accorded any permission or consent, either express or implied, for using/altering/distorting/changing the form of the musical work that has been used in the cinematograph,” it read.

Meanwhile, Good Bad Ugly has now become third highest-grossing film of Ajith's career globally, and has already emerged as the top Tamil film of the year, surpassing Ashwath Marimuthu's Dragon.

Good Bad Ugly collected around Rs 170 crore gross in five days, which is more than what Dragon(Rs 152 crore gross) collected in its lifetime.

Good Bad Ugly also stars Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Das, Sunil, Priya Prakash Varrier, among others, in key roles.

Suriya’s upcoming film, Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has garnered a good amount of hype among the actor’s fans and the regular audiences. The movie is just about two weeks away from its theatrical release, and Retro’s Censor Report is out now.

Malayalam filmdom’s biggest budget film Empuran that aims to do what KGF did to Kannada cinema is to be met with a one day token strike organised by Kerala Film Producers and Film Chamber. this has led to allegations doing the rounds that this move was a deliberate attempt to block the release of Mohanlal's L2: Empuraan, which has been produced by Antony Perumbavoor, slated to hit theatres on the same date. Kerala Film Producers Association, the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement to various film associations that all films that are releasing in theatres after March 25 must obtain permission from them prior to signing any contracts. During Dabba Cartel promotions streaming on Netflix, Jyotika who came with her hubby Suriya and two kids shared her experience of living under the same roof as another superstar in an interview with Screen. When the actor was asked about taking inspiration from her Netflix film, whether she and her husband, Suriya, leave for shoots with their dabbas, Jyotika responded with humour. Director Shankar has started preproduction work for Velpari and this has alarmed Indian 3 producers as the Director is not inclined to complete their film. Vidamuyurchi 2025 First Disaster / Suriya Retro 1st single / Vikram Prabhu - Sushmitha Bhat film launched

Vidamuyurchi released on February 6. It had a four-day extended opening weekend but failed to make the most of it. In the opening weekend, it earned only 63.25 crores. On Monday, the collection dropped to 3.20 crores, a sharp decline of 88% compared to the opening day’s 27 crores. Compared to Sunday’s 12.50 crores, it dropped 74%.Yesterday, on day 5, Vidaamuyarchi witnessed an upward trend, but it was useless since only 3.35 crores came in. Such jumps won’t take the film anywhere, and its fate is very much sealed. Including Tuesday’s numbers, the total collection at the Indian box office stands at 69.80 crore net. Ajith Kumar starrer is an expensive film with a budget of a whopping 185 crores. Compared to this cost, the film has earned only 69.80 crores, meaning only 37.72% of the total budget has been recovered so far. A huge amount of 115.20 crores is yet to be recovered. It’s clear that Vidaamuyarchi won’t recover its budget and face a box office deficit, thus ending its theatrical journey as a losing affair. Meanwhile, globally, the film has earned 118.84 crore gross in 6 days. It includes 82.36 crore gross from India and 36.48 crore gross from overseas.

Preity Mukhundhan joins Ashok Selvan next / Meera Jasmine back in Kannada/ Suriya to give voice for Vijay Devarakonda

Ashok Selvan's next, which is tentatively titled AS23, is all set to be helmed by debutant filmmaker Karthikeyan Ramakrishnan. Also starring Preity Mukhundhan as the female lead, the film went on floors with a pooja ceremony on Sunday. Vignesh Raja, who helmed the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Por Thozhil, has penned the story for the yet-to-be-titled film. The film is backed by Ashok Selvan and Abinaya Selvam under the Happy High Pictures banner. The film marks the banner's sophomore production after Oh My Kadavule (2020). Last seen in Emakku Thozhil Romance, Ashok Selvan currently awaits the release of the Mani Ratnam directorial Thug Life, in which he stars alongside Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan. In the pipeline, he also has Gangs Kuruthi Punal, a Prime Video series with Soundarya Rajinikanth as the creative producer. Preity Mukhundhan, on the other hand, was last seen in Star and has Kannappa in which she plays a princess opposite Vishnu and Maine Pyar Kiya coming up.

The teaser for Vijay Deverakonda’s upcoming pan-India spy action thriller, tentatively titled VD12, will be released on February 12. The film stars Bhagyashri Borse as the female lead and is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. As per reports, actors Ranbir Kapoor, Suriya, and Jr NTR are set to lend their voices for the teaser in different languages. Ranbir will narrate the Hindi version, while Suriya and NTR will do the same for the Tamil and Telugu versions, respectively. The production house, Sithara Entertainments, announced the teaser’s release date with a social media post featuring a flaming golden crown. The crew of the upcoming film tentatively titled 'Surya 44' starring leading star Surya has completed its shoot and released an exclusive photo.

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie 'Surya 44' stars Suriya, Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nasser, Sujith Shankar, Tamil, Premkumar, Ramya Suresh and others.
